Heat Only Boiler

What is a Heat Only Boiler?

If you need to replace an old boiler and have both a small expansion tank and a larger cold water storage cistern within your loft, you likely already have a heat only boiler. In this instance, if your home features an older heating system, replacing this with an updated, more efficient model of a heat only boiler may be the best option. This is due to the fact that the system may not cope with the higher water pressure that a combi or system boiler delivers. A heat only boiler is also a good option in those areas with a low water pressure and those homes that have multiple bathrooms.

A heating system for a heat only boiler consists of two water tanks in the loft, a hot water storage cylinder, a pump to push the hot water around the system, and both a timer and room thermostat. One of the loft tanks draws the water from the mains and fills the hot water cylinders, this is then heated by the boilers to ensure that all the taps within the home are supplied with enough hot water. The second tank (known as the feed and expansion tank) is often smaller and is designed to keep the water within the heating system at the correct level. The tank also allows for expansion in both tanks when the temperature of the water rises.

The main benefit of a heat only boiler is that it allows for several hot water taps to be run at the same time, making it the ideal option for those larger households and homes with several bathrooms.

Since the Building Regulations changed in April 2018 (known as Boiler Plus), all boiler installations must include a timer and a room thermostat.
